![]() Close your eyes, and the Helios's lightness lacks that same weighty reassurance. The downside to this is that the heft of the GHD Air was partly what made it feel so sturdy and luxurious compared to the lighter, cheaper rivals on the market. Its handle shape is ever-so-slightly more slender, making it feel more comfortable to hold. In fairness, though, the GHD Air's extra weight never really caused any issues thanks to how well-balanced it is, and the GHD Helios follows suit. The 510g Helios is smaller, sleeker and 20% lighter than the 640g GHD Air, but is a mite heavier than Dyson's 465g Supersonic. Yet instead of looking like siblings, the two dryers are more like cousins. The design of the GHD Helios and GHD Air is remarkably similar, from the location and design of the power, heat and cold shot buttons (a literal copy and paste job from the GHD Air) to the overall shape, the branded grille and the metal that sweeps around the rear of the dryer. GHD Helios review: Design and key features At this price, you really only have two dryers to choose from – and they both happen to be sold by GHD. ![]() In fact, we’d say it's the first hair dryer to rival the Dyson Supersonic for sheer drying power – and that's an impressive feat. It is however the most stylish of the bunch, and performance is a distinct step up from both the Air and the Nanoe. It also only ships with a single concentrator nozzle, compared to Dyson's two nozzles and diffuser. In terms of features, the GHD Helios and GHD Air are on par, yet the Helios lacks the styling settings of the Nanoe – two power and two heat settings plus a cool shot button vs the Nanoe's three power, three heat and cool shot. At the time of writing, it's retailing online at around the £65 mark. We’d also class the Panasonic Nanoe as another key rival and while it has an RRP of £110, it rarely sells for anywhere near that price. At £159, it sits between cheaper competitors – including its predecessor the £99 GHD Air – and the exceedingly expensive Dyson Supersonic (£300). The GHD Helios is pitched firmly as a premium, professional product. This redesigned, re-engineered hybrid of the GHD Air and GHD Aura is the model that the brand is hoping will re-establish it on top. Having seen these rivals gain ground, the iconic brand is back with the GHD Helios. That said, many of GHD’s rivals have caught up, selling dryers with similar – and in some regards better – performance for a cheaper price. It was released at a time when so-called professional hair dryers, and their matching high price tags, were fairly rare outside of hair salons, and GHD carved out a niche by charging a premium price for a premium, luxury product that was designed to appeal to consumers and hair stylists alike.īest hair straighteners 2023: Tried and tested favourites to tame frizzy hairĪt launch, it was considered a game changer, and it's a testament to that dryer’s quality that eight years on it’s still considered one of the best hair dryers on the market. GHD's first foray into the hair dryer market was the GHD Air in 2012. Has GHD built another hair dryer worthy of a place in Expert Reviews' best hair dryer list? GHD Helios review: What you need to know The burning question, as ever, is whether it has been worth the wait. The Helios has actually been available exclusively in a small number of salons since the start of January, but now it's on general sale in the UK. With cheaper models increasingly snapping at the Air's heels, the company's latest model – the GHD Helios – has arrived just in time. Having retired its GHD Aura a few years back, the brand's only remaining full-sized dryer has been the GHD Air. It is the perfect hair dryer for anyone who wants salon-quality results at home.GHD has long ruled the hair straighteners roost, but when it comes to hair dryers the British brand hasn't had it quite so easy. The color black was strictly avoided while fishing as it also brought bad luck., Hawaiian fishermen believed fish could hear them. A bad dream would bring bad luck bananas brought in his canoe would also bring the fisherman bad luck. They believed these images caused the fish to come near their canoes where they could be caught. Some fishermen took small stone images of Ku'ula or their own "Aumakua" with them in their canoes when they went fishing. Fish hooks were usually made out of bone, sometimes from the bones of their enemies. Whenever they made a new net, fish hook, or other fishing-related device, they had it blessed by a Kahuna (priest). All of their fishing equipment was kept clean, neat and orderly and stored in the homes high above the dirt floors. They believed that if they respected their fishing-related devices that they would have a better catch. Fishermen were taught to lacate the Ko'a by taking sitings with prominent land objects, sometimes using Ku'ula shrines as part of the alignment., Hawaiian fishermen had many fishing-related beliefs. These spots were called Ko'as and were the best locations where an abundance of fish might be caught. Theses Ku'ula stones were usually oceantumbled-polished stones, odd shaped stones, or sometimes hand carved stones., Fishing "hot-spots" were located out in the sea. Sometimes the first fish caught was marked in some way such as cutting its tail or keeping it in the bow of the canoe, separated from the rest of the catch until they returned., Mounted on top of this heiau platform is the original Ku'ula stone fish god. When they returned, they addressed the gods and placed the first fish caught on top of the heiau as an offering to Ku'ula or to their own "Aumakua. The shrine itself is also called a Ku'ula., Fishermen prayed to the Ku'ula stone image at these Ku'ula heiaus for an abundant catch before they went fishing. His wife, Hina, and son Aiai, were also fishing gods. Ku'ula was the most prominent god of fishing. These shrines are a place for prayer and offerings to the fish god Ku'ula or the fisherman's personal family gods ('Aumakua). ![]() It is sometimes known as the Pahe'ehe'e Ku'ula., Hawaiian Fishermen built these shrines on promontories along the seashore or near ponds and streams. This archaeological site is known as the Inikiwai Heiau. ![]() ![]() And the most amazing information is still coming to light.' Superb workmanshipīack in the lab at the Faculty of Archaeology Rachel Schats points to the next spectacular find: a skull with a very well maintained set of teeth and enamel that simply gleams with good health. And even today - eight years after the excavation - they spend two days a month in the archive. 'They helped us in the first instance with cleaning the bones, and later they did an enourmous amount of work in the Waterlands archive. Around 400 of the 8,000 residents of Middenbeemster are members of the association, which is a remarkably high percentage. ‘The Historical Association of Middenbeemster was an enormous help here,' Hoogland says. Thanks to this discovery, the archaeologists were able to decipher an old layout of the graveyard. This was the first instance where a grave could be linked to a particular name. 1833, 79 years old, was hammered nail by nail in the lid of the coffin. This man, Dirk Olij (see the box), had had the lid of his coffin decorated with small metal nails. It was initially a difficult process but then one of the long-deceased Beemster inhabitants offered a solution. Hoogland, Schats and other colleagues succeeded in identifying 120 of them. Ultimately 412 skeletons were brought to the surface, all of which were buried between 18. 'Dozens of Leiden's archaeology students have also learned the finer points of excavation techniques here.' 'Middenbeemster isn't only of scientific value for us,' Professor Menno Hoogland who led the excavation explains. Paintbrushes and vacuums were used to remove the final remnants of sediment with the utmost care. They were busy with their shovels and trowels removing the soil layer by layer to reveal the coffins and their skeletons. Visitors to Middenbeemster in 2011 would have seen the students at work among the graves. Rachel Schats arranging Sara's bones in the correct position 'And that makes us the more pleasant option.' Sometimes Leiden University is given the opportunity to excavate the skeletons for scientific research. ‘In Middenbeemster it was either us or the mechanical digger,'Shaats says. Old graves have to make way for new ones, and there are times when a complete graveyard has to be cleared. That's not so unusual: in the over-full Netherlands, being laid to rest for eternity is an illusion. ![]() When the Protestant church wanted to build an annex, the graveyard had to be cleared. Sara is just one of the 412 skeletons excavated in Middenbeemster in 2011. That's somethng I wouldn't have expected in a farming community 150 years ago.' Excavating is something you can learn In spite of her physical handicap, she played a full part in her community. Everything points to her having been a respected member of the community. And even more surprising: she married and had rather a lot of children. ![]() ‘We have found Sara in archive documents, which have given us some interesting details about her. ‘It's a remarkably interesting find,’ Schats comments. In around 1850 she could be seen walking arond Middenbeemster, just 1.30 metres tall. The woman suffered from dwarfism, and probably never stood taller than the chest of her adult contemporaries. But, if you were to climb onto the work bench and lie next to her on that bubble plastic, it would immediately be obvious that there is something not quite right. Sara lies there, stretched to her full length. Archaeologist Rachel Schats had arranged the skeleton in perfect order, from the shin bone to the femur and from the vertebrae to the skull. She died in 1863, and her cleaned and polished bones are all that remain of her. Sara (66) lies stretched out on a triple layer of bubble plastic on one of the work benches at the Faculty of Archaeology - or at least her bones do. ![]() ![]() SoundKonverter supports reading and writing tags for many formats, so the tags SoundKonverter is a frontend to various audio converters.
